Walter M. Fleming, M.D. Photo Locket 

This locket, dated October 18, 1867, includes two photos of a young Walter M. Fleming, M.D., cofounder of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (now Shriners International).  

In 1959, Dr. Fleming’s grandson Walter V.D. Fleming donated a collection of his grandfather’s belongings, including this locket, to Shriners International. The donation letter, written to then Imperial Potentate George E. Stringfellow states, “I am sure that my grandfather, who wrote your ritual, would want this material to be in the hands of the Shrine.” 

The locket was on display at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, until 2012. It is now on display at Shriners International Headquarters in Tampa, Florida.
