Maureen Maciel, M.D., chosen to lead Tampa hospital medical staff

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa is pleased to announce the appointment of Maureen Maciel, M.D., as its new chief of staff.

Dr. Maciel earned her medical degree at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. After completing a residency in orthopaedic surgery from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Dr. Maciel went on to a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa. Since 2007, Dr. Maciel has been dedicated to caring for children at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa.

“Dr. Maciel is a transformative leader who has an exceptional ability to bring together staff, physicians and hospital leaders around strategic initiatives and to move those initiatives forward,” hospital CEO Jeannette Skinner said. “She has an extensive knowledge of pediatric orthopaedics and care of children with special needs.”

Tom Edwards, chairman of the hospital’s Board of Governors, said Dr. Maciel  “represents the best in taking care of children and truly exemplifies our Love to the rescue® mission.”

Dr. Maciel called the appointment “an honor” and praised her colleagues for their dedication to the mission of providing pediatric specialty care.

“I’m honored to be able to lead our hospital through the next chapter of growth,” she said. “I’m proud to work with an exceptional team of health professionals devoted to children’s care.”

Areas of special interest for Dr. Maciel are limb lengthening and reconstruction, fibrous dysplasia, rickets, Blount’s disease, developmental hip dysplasia, clubfoot, cerebral palsy and fractures.

Dr. Maciel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the American Medical Association, the Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics, the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society.

Dr. Maciel and her husband, Daniel, have two sons, Salvatore, 7, and Lorenzo, 4.
