First Lady’s Program Focuses on Burn Care Education and Awareness

Friday, July 8, 2011

(TAMPA, Fla.) As the wife of the Imperial Potentate of Shriners International, it is customary for the First Lady to sponsor a fundraising program. First Lady Patty Severe’s 2011-2012 program, “Stepping Forward Toward a Brighter Future,” is focused on increasing awareness and fundraising for pediatric burn care education and training for medical professionals.

Burn awareness is a subject that is very personal to First Lady Patty, who lost a brother to burn injuries sustained in a tragic accident. After speaking with medical professionals, she learned that there is a pressing need to plan for the future of this specialized field of medicine.

“Current residents and medical school students interested in burn medicine must be fully prepared to enter this challenging and crucial field,” said Lady Patty. “The best way to do this is to provide a comprehensive training and education environment.”

First Lady Patty’s goal is to raise funds and develop an educational fellowship for medical professionals entering the burn reconstruction field. The fellowship will allow the recipients to spend time at one of the four Shriners Hospitals for Children® specializing in burn care, learning the necessary treatment and models of practice from their peers.
