Members of the Azan Shrine Temple of Melbourne arrived early at the staging area for Tuesday’s Shriners parade, finding a shady spot at SunSplash Park for one of the chapter’s most beloved possessions — a gleaming red 1957 Mack Thermodyne firetruck.
“It’s terrific,” said Cliff Schmitt, 84, a sentiment directed at both the truck and the parade. “This is absolutely the biggest and best parade you’ll see, bar none.”
The Melbourne temple’s antique firetruck was among the roughly 400 parade units showcased in the Shriners parade, the signature public event of the organization’s convention that runs through Thursday in Daytona Beach.
